Crosswing of former hall house, now shop and gallery. C14/15, much altered in C18, C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles and slate. 2-bay crosswing of former hall house to left, replaced in the late C16 by the present no. 2 (item 9/144, q.v.). The axis is slightly oblique to the street frontage, forming a parallelogram plan. C19 external stack to right near front. Early C19 one-bay wing to rear with contemporary internal stack to right. C20 conservatory to rear. 2 storeys and cellar. C20 projecting shopfront. Underbuilt jetty, with C20 projecting shop window of 3 lights. First floor, one early C19 sash of 16 lights with crown glass. C20 half-glazed door in early C19 reeded architrave. Plain parapet projecting slightly from elevation. Roof rebuilt to align with that of no. 2, hipped to the right and tiled. The elevation is extended to the right to block the narrow gap between this building and no. 4 (Chapel Hotel). The roof of the rear wing is of shallow pitch and slated. The rear elevation has on the first floor an introduced early C20 bow window and one C18/early C19 sash of 12 lights, re-set. Ground floor, both hearths blocked. Studding of rear wall removed, girt and binding beam boxed. Early C19 quarter-turn stair at rear left of main part, with turned newels, moulded left rail with stick balusters, C20 reproduction rail and balusters to right. In the right wall some C18 studding is exposed, infilled with earlier bricks, and a panel is exposed behind glass of a fragment of rubble wall composed of flint and roofing tiles. On first floor, late C19 cast iron grate with white marble surround in front stack. Frame mainly concealed by interior finishes. The smoke-blackened end wall of the adjacent former hall is exposed within no. 2, Market Hill (see above). Part of RCHM 51.
