ROCHFORD HALL ROAD TQ 89 SE 6/216 The Lawn II House. C18 and C19 features of probably earlier origin with later additions and alterations some by John Johnson. Stuccoed brick. Various grey slate roofs. 2 storeys. Of complex plan there is now a courtyard open to the west. The main east face is of 5 bays with a forward range of 2 bays to right and the single storey loggia return to left. Parapet follows through right bays with heavy band under. Main range 3 central bays are pedimented, the end bays with urn balusters to parapet. Central band follows through right range. Rusticated quoins to ground floor left and right and left angles to right bay. 5:2 window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes, moulded surrounds. C20 shutters to first floor. Ground floor windows taller and with moulded cornices over. Parapet and band to loggia return and fluted column with moulded capital and base to left. Small paned round headed window between the column and small right pilaster. Central portico to main range. Square pilasters and outer columns with capitals and bases inner Ionic columns support the flat canopy. 3 panelled outer door, rectangular fanlight over with semi-circular tracery. Moulded surround to inner doorway, frieze with swag decoration, flat canopy on brackets. The south face of 7 bays. Panelled and pilastered parapet, plastered external chimney stack to 6th bay (off right). Central 3 bays with pediment breaking through the parapet. Band under. 1, 3, 5 and 7 windows small paned vertically sliding sashes with C20 shutters, 2 and 4 small paned French windows with fanlights over, shutters to 2. Full width parapeted loggia to ground floor, the right and left parapet bays panelled, the central bays with urn balusters between pilasters. 6 Ionic and square fluted end columns support the canopy the left west return is open with a fluted pilaster to house wall. Tall small paned vertically sliding sash windows to bays 1-3 and 7 of house wall. Central French windows, semi-circular fanlight over, moulded surround. The left (west) return of this range is parapeted with panels to parapet, band under and central band. Rusticated quoins to ground floor. Of 5 bays each with a window with moulded surrounds to first floor, the right window is blocked, the 2 left window cills are narrower and lower than central band. Various small paned windows. Ground floor, 2 left and far right moulded window surrounds, the heads blocked to all 3 and far right fully blocked, small paned sashes to left. Central small paned round headed window, moulded surround. The range to north of the courtyard is later of painted brick with hipped grey slate roof. Interior features include a fine hall with wrought iron balustrade to balcony and stairs, some with S motif. Square fluted columns support the balcony, moulded cornice and frieze with urns and swags, 6-panelled doors, moulded surrounds. Panelled shutters to windows.
