Description

MUCH DEWCHURCH CP - SO 42 NE 9/102 Newhouse Farmhouse and enclosing walls 20.10.52 to north-west GV II Farmhouse. Probably early C17 with later alterations. Sandstone rubble, sandstone dressings. Welsh slate and concrete tile roofs. Rubble end stacks. In two rectangular parallel blocks both aligned north-east/south- west. Larger block to south-east has five bays. Lower block to north-west is linked by parallel sandstone rubble walls about eight feet high forming a yard. Main block has cellar. Two and three storeys and attic. South-east elevation has three windows, mid-C20 casements with cambered heads, two to left and one blind beneath gable in centre. Barred window also with cambered head to cellar opening to right-hand side of ledged door. Main entry from yard to north-west is roughly central. Lower block has two storeys. Its north-west elevation has three windows, C20 casements. Entry to left of centre under gabled C20 porch has contemporary glazed door. Interior of main block has C17 single-flight staircase rising from north-west immediately behind entry. Turned balusters, moulded rail and strings with carved finials to four newels. Beneath is a single-flight staircase to cellar, the balusters of which are missing. Cellar has moulded oak lintel forming 4-centred arch to fireplace and two ovolo-moulded cross-beams. Attic has collar trusses with ties at floor level. These have run-out chamfer stops. Interior of lower block (not inspected) said to have in situ C17 staircase with moulded newels and handrails.
