STOKENHAM KERNBOROUGH SX74SE Kernborough Grange 7/209 II
House. Probably C16 or early C17 extended in C18 or early C19 and restored in late C20. Roughcast stone rubble. Asbestos tile roof with gable ends, large projecting lateral stack at front with later brick shaft with slate cowl. Small rendered stack at right hand end. Plan and Development: 3-room plan house. The central hall has a lateral stack at the front and a stair turret at the back. The right hand room heated from a gable end stack was probably the inner room. The unheated left end room formerly had a cross-passage between it and the hall, its partition has been removed. In the C18 or C19 a single storey outshut was built behind the left end of the house and in the C20 a single storey wing was added to the rear of the right hand end. The small outbuilding attached to the front of the left end is probably late C18 or C19. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-5 window south front. Large projecting lateral stack at centre, the front wall to left is flush with stack but to the right it is set back. Late C19 and C20 2-light casements with glazing bars, 2 on first floor break the eaves with small gables above. Doorway to left of stack and slate lean-to canopy on timber cantilevers and C20 door. Doorway near right hand end of front also has C20 door. Small single storey outbuilding on left end of front with hipped roof and doorway on its right hand side. Rear elevation has large circular stair turret at centre with single storey outshut to its right and a small C20 single storey extension to the left. Interior: Much restored inside in late C20. Inner right hand room has small blocked fireplace. Hall fireplace has been reduced in size and has timber lintel. Partition between lower left end room and former passage has been removed. All the ceiling beams have been replaced, large stone newel stairs in stair tower rise from rear of hall. All roof timbers have been replaced except for truss at lower left end which had threaded purlins.
