BRETHERTON CARR HOUSE LANE SD 42 SE 3/15 Carr House (Formerly listed 22.10.52 as Carr House Farmhouse) - II*

House, dated 1613 on porch; altered. Handmade brick with diaper pattern of blue headers, large irregular stone quoins, slate roof (remodelled). E-plan, 5 bays. Two and a half storeys, symmetrical, with 3-storey gabled porch, and slightly-projecting wings now under same roof (except porch); porch has open outer doorway with square head breaking into massive rectangular lintel displaying lengthy inscription in raised lettering (see History below), with hoodmould, and full-width stone mullion window on each floor above. Narrow set-back 2nd and 4th bays and broad facades of wings each have one similar 4-light window at ground and 1st floors, the lower with hoodmoulds and the upper with a moulded dripband carried round the whole; and windows of each wing are linked by narrow vertical channel (said to be technical means of limiting window tax); all windows have slightly-recessed moulded mullions and diamond-lattice glazing. Left gable wall, which is stepped in towards the rear (set-back part being stair turret) has 3-light chamfered brick mullion window to attic and 2 similar windows in each face of stair turret, the lower at rear altered as door and the upper blocked. Projecting further to rear beyond stair turret are 2 massive hearth-wings to 2nd and 3rd bays, each surmounted by a rectangular chimney bearing respectively 2 and 3 diagonal flues, the first with a 2-light firewindow at ground and 1st floor of side wall. Right gable has inserted door at ground floor, 3-light mullion window at attic level.

Interior: Post and rail partition walls, 1/4-round-moulded beams, upper cruck roof; inglenook fireplace in central hall part with cambered timber bressummer; framed newel staircase; remains of fireplaces to chamber over hall and chamber over 3rd bay.

History: datestone inscription reads: THOMAS STONES OF LONDON HABER DASHER AND ANDREW STONES OF AMS TERDAM MARCHANT HATH BUILDED THIS HOWSE OF THEIR OWNE CHARGES AND GIV ETH THE SA ER JOHN STO ME UNTO NES ANODOM THEIR BROTH NI 1613 LAUS

Jeremiah Horrocks (d.1641) Curate of Hoole and astronomer, said to have observed Transit of Venus from this house.
