SUNK ISLAND EAST BANK ROAD TA 21 NE (south side, off) 10/81 Middle Farmhouse GV II

Farmhouse. 1855 by S S Teulon for the Crown Commissioners. Red brick in Flemish bond. Welsh slate roof. Approximately T-shaped on plan: 2-room east entrance front with entrance hall to left, and single-room wing to right; twin-gabled wing to rear, with garden entrance to left return. East front: 2 storeys, 4 first-floor windows; asymmetrical, with gabled 2-window section breaking forward to left of centre. Chamfered plinth. Main entrance has step to recessed board door in chamfered wooden frame and chamfered segmental-headed brick reveal; chamfered trefoiled panel above beneath segmental relieving arch, containing painted lozenge-shaped relief panel with royal cypher, crown and date. Section set forward to right: ground-floor canted bay window with plate-glass sashes, ashlar lintels and sills, pair of first-floor 12-pane sashes beneath segmental arches and segmental-pointed relieving arches with herringbone brick infill, circular flush brick panel to gable with decorative brick infill, tumbled-in brick and stepped eaves to gable. Section to right: tall unequal 15-pave ground- floor sashes, 6-pane first-floor sashes, both with sills and segmental arches. Corniced axial stack to right. Single-storey 2-window wing set back to right has board door beneath segmental-pointed arch, 16-pane and 12- pane sashes beneath segmental arches. Left return forms south garden front with 4 first-floor windows. Gabled 2-window range set forward to right has 12-pane segmental-headed ground-floor sash, small decorative panel to left with brick and ashlar insets in chamfered segmental-headed reveal, segmental-headed 12-pane stair window and first-floor casement, circular flush brick panel, stepped eaves, and tumbled-in brick to gable. All windows below pointed relieving arches with decorative brick infill. Section set back in angle to left has single-storey porch to left with C20 glazed door beneath segmental arch and hipped roof, segmental-headed 18-pane window to right with similar 9-pane casement to first floor. Wing to left has 12-pane ground-floor sash beneath segmental and pointed relieving arches, 12-pane half-dormer with tumbled-in brick to gable. Double-span roof. Projecting corniced end stack with tumbled-in brick to offsets. North range of wing has half-hipped roof and adjoining single-storey outhouse with hipped roof. Interior: closed string staircase with moulded handrail, chamfered newel and Gothic-style splat balusters with pierced trefoils; panelled doors in architraves.
