ST SAMPSON SX 15 NW 8/242 Lantyan Farmhouse - II

Farmhouse. Late C18, with addition to rear left of mid C19 and some later alterations. Slatestone rubble, with granite quoins and brick dressings. Concrete tiled roof with gable ends and brick gable end stacks. Slurried slate roof on inner slope of rear left wing and on Cl9 lean-to. Plan: double depth plan, with 2 rooms to front and the central front door opening directly into the room to left. 2 shallow rear service rooms, the one to rear right a kitchen, heated by a stack to the outer side; to rear centre, a stair tower, approached by a rear lateral corridor connecting the service rooms. Probably in the early C19 or mid C19, an addition of one-room plan was added to the rear left, and a lean-to at the left side. The addition is unheated, and the upper floor is reached by an external stair on the inner side. 3 storeys, symmetrical 3-window front; ground floor has central panelled and glazed door with hipped concrete tiled hood. To left an C18 12-pane sash with sidelights and brick cambered head, to right a C19 20-pane sash with sidelights and brick cambered head, probably an alteration of the mid C19. At first floor, three 16-pane sashes in exposed boxes with flat brick arches ; second floor has three 12-pane sashes in exposed boxes with cambered brick arches. Straight joint to left, to a 2- storey lean-to, which has at ground floor a 12-pane sash with sidelights and timber lintel, first floor large 16-pane sash with flat brick arch. At the right side, no windows to the front room; the rear kitchen has a wide external stack with large curved oven at the base with a slate roof. At the left side, the C19 lean-to has 2 C20 2-light casements at ground floor and large 16-pane sash at first floor. To the left, the 2-storey service wing, at a lower roof level, with a straight joint; this has 2 C20 casements at ground floor and 2 C20 flat-roofed dormers at first floor, with brick stack to end. The inner side of this wing has C20 steps leading to upper C20 door; rear gable end ahs plain C20 door and C19 2-light casement at first floor. The rear of the house has central stair tower with hipped roof; rooms to right and left in rear are of 2 storeys only under a catslide roof. The stair tower has a 2- light C20 window to the cellar, and at upper ground floor level and first floor level a late C19 12-pane sash. To right, a C20 window at ground floor and late C19 sash at first floor. To left, stable door and 2-light casement, 2-light casement at first floor, both of C19. Interior The stair tower has a fine late C18 stair, with turned balusters and moulded handrail. In the front 2 rooms, the fireplaces are C20 replacements. Rest of house not accessible at time of survey (July 1986).
