SP 10 NE HATHEROP HATHEROP VILLAGE (south side)
2/78 Hatherop Castle School
GV II
Former large country house now private school. Late C17, with extensive alterations and additions in 1850-56 by Henry Clutton for Lord de Mauley. Coursed and dressed stone or ashlar, slate roofs, scattered ashlar stacks mostly with several flues with moulded cornices and blocking course. Very large complex block mostly of 3 storeys or 2 plus attic, with 5-storey tower to south-west. Kip's view in early C18 shows north front with qabled attics at different heights and central square embattled tower and smaller ranges to east. This largely remains, and was extended by Clutton to the south and west and service wings remodelled to east. North front: 6 coped gables (some with finials) with Central embattled projecting entrance tower of 3 storeys, gables lower on left than on right. Gables have 3 or 4-light stone mullions with dripmould to left, 3-light mullion and transoms and dripmould to right. First floor has 3 pairs of 2-light mullion and transoms to left, with additional single light and single light oriel window adjoining porch tower; on right, lengthened mullion and transom adjacent to tower now forming 2 pairs of 2-light mullions over each other with blind stone strapwork panels between, two 2-light mullions and transoms to far right and central 18-light canted mullion and transom bay (2 transoms) forming mains window lighting stairwell. Ground floor has 2-light mullion and transoms on both sides. Central porch tower has 3-light mullion and transom on each upper floor and stone (de Mauley?) coat of arms over large decorative timber front door with moulded round arch and keystone. Projecting moulded string courses between floors; first and ground floor windows to right and some ground floor windows to left have elaborate Gothick leading. East end of main north front has octagonal turret with embattled parapet and slightly stepped stone spire, top storey of turret open with arches openings with keystones and impost blocks inserted in rectangular frames. Old east service range of 2 storeys with 3 gables each with 3-light stone mullion and dripmould and various stone windows below, with large C19 archway further east with single large gable over, giving access to side and rear, and end square tower of 3 storeys with chamfered corners and partly embattled parapet, with direct access to Church. Rear south facade completely of mid C19 with 3-gabled central block with 2 large canted bays and flanking projecting wings, cross gabled, with large 3-storey canted bay to left and small canted oriel to right. Bays have stone strapwork decoration at parapet level. All fenestration in stone mullion and transoms with some mullions to top storey. Some Gothick tracery in same style as front. Small colonnade in antis between main block and left-hand wing in front of elaborate arched stone doorway with flanking small round arches and oculi over. Five-storey tower rises directly behind. Interior: retains much of its very fine C19 remodelling in Jacobean style, especially on ground floor in great hall, staircase and panelled passageway between with stone archway in similar style to doorway on south front. The whole set in very fine garden with low-walled terrace to west with fountain and "antique" bronze statuary. (V.C.H., Glos. Vol VII).
