Description

TURKDEAN UPPER TURKDEAN SP 11 NW 6/95 Turkdean Manor 23.1.52 GV II Detached house. Probably late C16 (contains doorcase dated 1588), for the Banystree family and C17, restored 1905. Main body coursed squared and dressed limestone, block at rear ashlar, stone slate roof, ashlar stacks. Complex plan comprising two parallel blocks, one C16, one C17 with linking ranges, single storey C20 extensions right. Single storey outbuilding, converted early C20, linked to C20 extensions via wall right C16 block; 2½ storeys. Flat- chamfered plinth to main body. Triple-gabled garden front. Tall double-chamfered 4-light hollow-moulded stone-mullioned casements with king mullions to ground floor. Similar smaller casements to first floor. Double-chamfered 3-light stone-mullioned casements with continuous hoods lighting gables. Stopped hoods over ground and first floor windows. Six-light stone-mullioned window with Tudor-arched lights and C20 plank door within moulded Tudor-arched surround in right gable end. Single storey outbuilding linked to main body right lit by 6-light stone-mullioned casement with king mullion and 4-centred headed lights. C20 plank door with fillets towards left end. C17 block at rear; 2 storeys and attic lit by two 2-light C20 roof dormers. Three-windowed facade. Stone- mullioned cross windows with stopped hoods to first floor. Two tall 2-light double-chamfered C19-C20 stone-mullioned casements to ground floor left of blocked doorway with rectangular surround. Three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement with stopped hood right. Roof of C16 main body with saddleback coping to gable ends and pointed finials. Late C19-early C20 rainwater heads initialled W.A.R./J.M.B. Interior not accessible but contains a Tudor-arched fireplace and panelled room according to Verey.
