Manor House. (Formerly listed as Winfrith Fields Farmhouse)

House. Late C16 origin, considerably altered in C18 and early C19. Brick and stone walls, roof part tiled, part stone slated, brick stacks. L-shaped plan, rear wing - C16 - was originally longer, shortened in early C19. Main block of two storeys and attics. Central panelled door with fanlight, and raised cement surround. Ground floor has two double-hung sash windows with centre glazing bars. First floor has four double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. Attic has three hipped dormers with casements with glazing bars. Rear wing of two storeys. South elevation has, on ground floor, one double-hung sash window with glazing bars and a blocked doorway. First floor has one horizontally sliding sash window with glazing bars and two blocked windows. Small extension in angle between main block and rear wing, with lean-to roof of stone slates. North of the main block, a range of one storey and attics, containing the kitchen and former service rooms - now partly converted to a separate unit - "Manor Cottage" - (in same ownership as Manor House). Front elevation of this range has a modern part-glazed door and metal windows. At south end, a projecting section with gable end to road. Rear elevation of this range has ledged door and a pair of glazed doors. Modern metal window and one double-hung sash on ground floor. Attic has two dormers with casements with glazing bars. Internally, the kitchen has a stone fireplace with moulded cambered lintel and jambs, probably re-set. The rooms north of this have heavy oak ceiling beams. In the main block, the central ground floor room has a chamfered oak ceiling beam with run-out stops. Several early C19 doors with raised panels. Good C16 oak staircase in south wing, with heavy turned balusters and rectangular section newels with carved caps. Arch at foot of stair has carved heads as "keystones". C16 moulded oak door frame in entrance to ground floor room of this wing. In the main block, three first floor rooms have C18 panelling with raised panels and moulded cornices. RCHM Monument 3.
