MERTON MERTON SS 5212 22/158 Nos 3 and 4, Bounsell's - GV II

Pair of cottages, one unoccupied, formerly one house. Early - mid C17 possibly with earlier origins, with C19 addition. Plastered stone rubble and cob walls. Hipped thatch roof. Plastered rubble axial stack and rendered brick lateral stack slightly set in from eaves at the front. Plan: Probably built with 2 room and through passage plan, hall to the left (now unoccupied cottage) heated by stack backing onto passage. The fireplace at the front of the lower room is likely to be a C19 introduction possibly dating from when the house was divided into two. An outshut was also added at the rear. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front of circa early C20 casements to left - a 2 light one on the first floor under a small gable, a 3-light one below it and another 2-light casement to the left of that. The 2 first floor windows to the right are C19 casements with leaded lights. Mid C20 3-light casement below to the right. C19 plank door to right of centre gives access to left-hand cottage the right-hand cottage has its access in the end wall. Interior: Only ground floor of right-hand cottage accessible and it exhibited no early features although evidently it had not been modernised within the last 50 years and some features may be concealed. The external appearance of the roof suggests that early roof timbers may survive which might give a more accurate guide to the date of the building. It features a very traditional external appearance.
