Description

STEEPLE LANGFORD LITTLE LANGFORD SU 03 NW (south side) 2/90 Little Langford model farm GV II Model farm buildings. Circa 1858, by S. Clarke for Wilton Estate. Limestone ashlar, Welsh slate and corrugated asbestos roofs. Plan: long north range with four ranges projecting to south and enclosing yards on three sides. North side has central barn range with three elliptically-arched openings and one square-headed entry, three planked loft doors to right and four cusped gableted vents to roof; attached to right is open-fronted cart shed with wooden posts and slate roof with two gableted vents, attached to left is single storey dairy with planked doors and fixed windows with arched panels over. West range of cowsheds has round-arched openings to south gable, east side facing yard has stable doors and cast-iron horizontally-sliding windows with arched lights, west yard has lean-to shelter shed on north side, ashlar wall enclosing south side. Centre of western three ranges consists of shelter sheds with short stable at right angles to south end; round-arched doors and central shuttered window with gabled loft door over. Range to right has round-arched stable doors and central window with arched panel over, asbestos roof, now open cowshed with C20 lean-to shelter shed on east side. East range to right has large round-arched cart entry to south gable, now cowshed with corrugated asbestos roof. Interiors of buildings altered to facilitate C20 dairy farming, but retain twin angle king post roof trusses, English bond brick partition walls. (Plans in Wilton Estate Office)
