Description

ST NEOT SX 26 NW 10/121 Treverbyn Mill - II Watermill. Probably C18, with few later alterations. Slatestone and granite rubble with granite quoins. Hipped slate roof. Plan: 3-storey mill, with the launder along the right side, with the water flowing from the rear and driving an overshot wheel. The mainshaft goes into the mill at first floor level, the stones formerly at second floor. Addition to rear of 1 room plan, probably for storage, of C19. Exterior: Front has stable door to left and small door with strap hinges to right; stable door at first floor to right; dormer with hipped roof and 2-light casement with toplights. Left side has 2-light casement at ground floor and two 2-light casements at first floor. Straight joint to the rear addition which has a door with chamfered granite jambs and lintel, and 4-pane light; 2-light casement at first floor; corrugated iron roof with gable end to rear. Right side has 2-light opening at first floor with shutters in the mill, and door to the addition. Wooden launder with an adjustable wooden board, so the water flow can be disconnected from the wheel when necessary. Cast iron wheel with cast iron floats. At the rear, 3-light casement at ground floor of 8 panes each light with L hinges and cambered brick head; first floor has 2-light 8-pane casement with granite lintel. Interior: There is no pit wheel in this arrangement; the waterwheel drives the great spur wheel directly at first floor level, from which there is an ancillary drive to the stones at second floor level. The stones have been removed. The mill is in use for grinding cattle feed; there is a hopper going from the second floor back down to the first floor, where the ground grain is sent into a feed mixer. There is a hatch in the floor between the ground and the first floor. At first floor there is another ancillary drive which gears onto a belt drive for other machinery. The roof is of C19, with principal rafters, crossed at the apex and bolted, purlins resting on the backs of the principal rafters.
