House. Mid C17 incorporating remains of C16 dwelling, C18 alterations and additions and further late C19 or early C20 alterations. For the Nicholson family. Partly timber-framed, with orange-red brick in Flemish bond and alterations in English garden wall bond and pantile roof. 3-cell, direct entry, L-shaped plan with part of a timber-frame in the wing and 2 further C18 2-storey, gable-ended outshuts. 2 storeys, 3 first floor windows. 2-storey, pedimented porch between first and second windows with an elliptical doorway arch under a sash with glazing bars set into an opening formerly wider and less tall. Blocked oval lights to side walls. Side seats to porch interior, battened and studded door with hand-wrought iron strap hinges, timber lintels. 16-pane sashes to other similarly altered openings under flat brick arches with voussoirs alternately proud and flush, made level by later infill. Moulded first floor band and band above first floor windows carried around gable ends. Dentilled moulded brick cornice. Left gable has first floor 4-light diamond section brick mullion window and 3-light similar mullion window in gable, right gable has 4-light mullion windows to ground and first floors, all under flat brick arches with voussoirs alternately proud and flush. Brick capped kneelers and gable ends. Curvilinear gable to original rear wing. Stacks to rear of ridge, that between original wing and main block has 2 diagonal shafts. Interior. C17 panelling to hall inserted with C20 carved frieze, fireplace with salt cupboard under reconstructed brick arch. Room to right has original C17 panelling with overmantel of 3 carved arched panels and an ovolo-moulded ceiling beam with cyma stops to 1 end. Some panelled doors. The Grange was the home of the Nicholson family who held office under the Archbishop of York from at least C16. 'North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study Group Report, No 822'.
