NEWBIGGIN VILLAGE STREET SD 9885-9985 (north side) 14/111 Brookside with adjoining cottage and former barn GV II

House, cottage and barn, the barn now outbuilding and flat. House: late C17 - early C18 with early C19 alterations, cottage dated 1880, barn dated 1812. Rubble, coursed to house and cottage, stone slate roofs. 2 storeys, 1:2:3 bays. House, in centre: quoins to right. Central part-glazed board door in ashlar surround with base and impost blocks and rounded inner corners to lintel. 16-pane sash windows with slab sills and lintels. Shaped kneeler, ashlar coping and end stack to right. Cottage to left: C20 casement window and glazed door on ground floor; 2-light hollow-chamfered mullion window with hoodmould on first floor. Below first-floor window, recessed plaque with raised characters forming ligature of "A B" and "1880". Corniced ashlar end stacks. Former barn to right: quoins to right. Central board doors in cart opening with segmental arch of rubble voussoirs. To left and right, C20 part-glazed doors in ashlar surrounds, the lintel of that to left " ID " with recessed panel and raised characters 1812 . First floor: casement windows in ashlar surrounds. Rear, house: on ground-floor, 2-light flat- faced mullion window and 2-light double-chamfered mullion window; landing window with round arch of rubble voussoirs with hoodmould; surrounds of 2 first-floor 2-light double-chamfered mullion windows. Interior, house: in ground-floor room to left, early C19 cast-iron fire grate in Dent marble surround, flanked by pedimented niches with fluted pilasters, friezes and with paterae in corners and on cornice. The niches were formerly cupboards, from which the doors, of 6 reeded decorative panels, have been replaced in the matching doorcases to the 2 main ground-floor rooms; matching shutters and window linings. Stone shelves in dairy on ground floor to rear left. Stone dogleg staircase with stick balusters and bobbin corner posts. The first-floor room of the cottage was used as a school room, the coat pegs from which survive.
