House. C15, extended in mid-Cl6, altered in C20. Partly timber framed and plastered, partly of red and blue bricks in English bond, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 2-bay hall facing E with 3-bay crosswing to left and external stack beyond. 2-storey porch, jettied on 3 sides, in front of right end of hall, and stair tower to rear. All this is timber framed, plastered except for the rear wall of the hall, which has exposed framing. To the right, mid-C16 brick extension in the form of a second hall range and 2-bay crosswing with external stack beyond. Single-storey extensions to right and rear of this part. Second hall range of 2 storeys with attics, remainder of 2 storeys. The timber framed part has 2 C20 casements on the ground floor, 3 on the first floor, of which one is in a gabled dormer. Underbuilt jetty on left crosswing. Plaster coving below jetties of porch. The range to the right is of red brick with diaper patterns in flared headers, except the gable of the crosswing which is plastered, and the plastered extension beyond. A brick plinth has been rebuilt in Flemish bond at the left end. On the ground floor, 2 windows each of 2 4-centred lights with chamfered square head and jambs, with moulded labels, and one similar window formerly of 3 lights, converted to a C20 casement. On the first floor, 3 C20 casements with original chamfered square heads and jambs. Doorway with 4-centred arched head, converted to C20 casement. The rear of the brick range has a similarly converted doorway and a blocked window of one light with round head on the ground floor, and on the first floor a window of 3 round-headed lights with chamfered square head and jambs (now inside a rear lean-to) and a blocked square-headed window. The original hall formerly had a C16 brick stack in the right bay, removed in the C20, and has a moulded girt at the right end and a high inserted floor with exposed plain beams and joists. Left crosswing not examined internally, but reported to have a crownpost roof with 4-way bracing. Room over hall not examined. The brick range has a chamfered beam with step stops, and on the first floor a disused rear hearth with 4-centred arch, formerly plastered, now stripped. The roofs of this range are of heavy queen-strut construction, the purlins chamfered with step stops. Stair of solid treads to attic. RCHM 5.
