BURES HAMLET WATER LANE TL 9034 (north side) 5/49 Water Lane Cottage GV II Water Lane is wrongly shown on the O.S. map as Brook Street. House. Circa 1600. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays facing S, with internal chimney stack at right end of middle bay against rear wall, and 2 C19 single-storey extensions to rear, roofed with red clay pantiles. 2 storeys. 3-window range of horizontally sliding sashes of 12 lights, and one casement of 6 lights on the first floor. Ripped gablet at each end. C19 plain boarded door in C20 gabled porch on right return wall. One diagonally arranged shaft on chimney stack, behind ridge. Large wood-burning hearth of C16 bricks, some reversed, with modern brickwork at sides. Heavy studding. Axial beams in each bay, but otherwise each floor is different. In left bay, plain joists of horizontal section with original trimmed stair trap. In middle bay, inserted floor with joists of vertical section, chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. In right bay, joists plastered to soffits. Collar-rafter roof, unsooted, with original partitions of wattle and daub.
