4/408 Water board cottages and buildings attached at rear

Water company houses. Mid C19 for Durham Water Company, founded 1847 and functioning by 1849. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof. L-plan. 2 storeys, 2 houses of 3 bays each and right extension of one storey, one bay; rear wing 2 storeys, 4 bays.

Cottages in Italianate style have doors in third and fifth bays, under 3-paned overlights, in enclosed porches; first door flushed, second 4-panel. Bracketed sills to windows, mostly paired margined sashes; some single renewed sashes. Blank gound-floor fourth bay. Giant pilasters define bays and support wide eaves bands. Within these, ground floor lintel band with bracketed cornices over windows. Similar cornices float above first floor windows. Low-pitched hipped roof has wide eaves resting on paired brackets. End and front chimneys with plinths and cornices, that at left end square with shaped coping. Yellow chimney pots. Right extension has boarded double door. Rear wing has flat- coped gables. C20 right extension on rear wing not of interest.
