Manor House. Late C16-early C17 origin, enlarged in mid-C17 and part rebuilt c1906 - Architect Philip Sturdy. Rough ashlar stone walls, stone slate roofs, ashlar stacks with moulded caps. 2 storeys. Rear (west) range, now kitchens etc. Late C16 - early C17. North and south ranges added 1642 (date on rainwater head - JAD for J and A Dolling). North range largely rebuilt 1906. Entrance (east) front has central porch flanked by gables - ends of north and south ranges. Porch has moulded parapet and round-arched doorway with moulded caps. Inner doorway with depressed 4-centred arch. South gable has a 3-light stone mullioned window with hoodmould on each floor. North gable - 1906, in similar style. In north wall of rear range a fragment of stone statue re-set in niche. South front has, at west end, 2 stone mullioned windows with 'C' and 'D' on stops, (for Christopher Dolling, died 1612). First floor window has 'Cheese Room' painted on lintol. Ovolo-moulded stone mullioned windows in east section of this front - 1642. Large buttresses to this front. All mullioned windows have lead lights. Attached range at west end of south front - former cider cellar, has rubble stone walls and stone slate roof. Ledged door and casement windows, one with lead lights. Lean-to extension at rear of rear range. Internally, one ground floor room in north range has a length of C17 panelling, re-set. Rear range has, on ground floor, deep chamfered ceiling beams. Room over kitchen has stone fireplace with elliptical arch. In south range, front ground floor room has stone corner fireplace with 4-centred arch. Rear room has C17 panelling with carved frieze. On first floor, some C17 plank and muntin partitions, and re-set C17 panelling. House believed to be on site of medieval house of Alice Brewer who gave Purbeck marble for building Salisbury Cathedral. Reputed site of quarry north-west of house. RCHM Monument 21 (Dorset Vol II).
