House. Late C18 for William Marris, with early C19 rear additions and internal alterations. Early sections in coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings; later sections in red brick. Pantile roof. Double-depth plan with central entrance hall front and extension set back to right. 2 storeys (with attic to rear section), 5 bays; symmetrical. Brick plinth. Doric doorcase with pilasters supporting fluted entablature and open dentilled pediment; 6 beaded-panel door and radial fanlight in arched panelled reveal. 12-pane sashes in flush wood surrounds with stucco flat arches and projecting sills. Tumbled-in brick to gables with stone coping and shaped kneelers. Axial and end stacks. C19 single storey wing to right has panelled door with carved stone grotesque head above and 2 casements with glazing bars under segmental brick arches. Interior: open well staircase with ramped and wreathed handrail and column-on-vase balusters with square knops; early C19 moulded ceiling cornices to stairhall, front rooms and ground floor rear study which has fitted Gothick cupboards; quadrapartite plaster vaulting in rear garden passage; panelled doors and window shutters, beaded architraves with floral decoration to front rooms. The Gothick details probably by William Fowler of Winterton, 1761-1832, or his son Joseph, 1791-1882.
