Country house, now a school. Circa mid C18; extended in circa mid C19. Rendered and with stone dressings; ashlar extensions. Hipped plain file and slate roofs with lead rolls to hips and ridges; moulded stone cornices and blocking courses. Panelled axial stacks with moulded stone cornices. PLAN: Double-depth house with three principal front rooms, the centre room is the entrance hall which leads to a stairhall at the back; the 8-bay back range projects at the centre and is wider and extends beyond the front. In circa mid C19 bow-fronted wings were added, flanking the original front; behind the single-storey right-hand wing a large mid C19 block with a tower on the front. Classical style. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys. Symmetrical 2:3:2 bay south front, the centre breaks forwards with pediment containing festooned cartouche; rusticated stone quoins, string courses and moulded window architraves; 12-pane sashes on the ground and tint floors, smaller 9-pane sashes on the second floor; C19 Tuscan tetrastyle stone portico to central doorway. Flanking circa mid C19 ashlar 3-bay bow-fronted wings, 2-storeys to left and single-storey to right, quoins, cornices and blocking courses, sash windows with moulded architraves; behind the right-hand wing a large circa mid C19 block with a tower on the front and 3-bay east side elevation. At rear [north], long 3-storey, 3:2:3 bay elevation with centre projecting; C19 block projecting on left and brick service range on right. INTERIOR: C18 interior largely complete. Panelled entrance hall with niches, chimney piece and moulded plaster ceiling. Very good open-well staircase with open string, shaped tread-ends, turned balusters, moulded handrail rammed at corners and with wreathed curtail, panelled dado, moulded plaster wall panels and Rococo coved ceiling with large square lantern with oculi and ribbed ceiling; similar but larger lantern over landing. First floor chamber with bolection panelling. Many good C18 chimney pieces complete with grates. Most of the C18 joinery is intact including panelled doors and balustrade to cellar stairs. Mid C19 extensions have large rooms with moulded plaster ceilings and marble chimney pieces. Complete set of servants bells and rack in game-larder. SOURCE: Buildings of England, page 108.

2. A good C18 house of irregular plan. Stone with hipped tile roof and plastered brick stacks. Front breaks forward with pediment having heraldic shield; 2 storeys; sash windows; 7 window front; curved wing at each end 2 storeyed on left and single storeyed on right; wide four columned Doric porch.
