Description

WRABNESS CHURCH ROAD TM 13 SE (north side) 1/114 Wrabness Hall Farmhouse GV II House. Late medieval and C16, altered in early C19. Timber framed, clad with red brick in Flemish bond (partly painted), plaster and weatherboarding, roofed with slate. Main range facing SW, with 2 axial stacks, and C16 2-bay crosswing at left end, with internal stack at left side. Weatherboarded extension to rear of the junction (possibly a stair tower originally), and C19 brick extension to left of it. Single-storey lean-to in left rear angle. External stack at right end, and single-storey lean-to beyond it. C18/19 dairy to rear of right end, roofed with red clay 'Roman' tiles. 2 storeys. 4-window range of late C19 sashes of 4 lights, with flat arches of gauged brick. 6-panel door, the top 2 panels glazed, in Tuscan portico, and one C20 plain door to right of it. Low-pitched roofs with long overhanging eaves. The right half of the front elevation is set back. Both roofs are of shallow pitch, aligned NW-SE, disregarding the original alignment of the crosswing. The left return and small parts of the rear elevation are plastered, the remainder faced with brick. The main range has widely-spaced studs in the rear elevation, exposed internally, but replaced with brick in the front elevation, and the walls have been raised approx. 1.50 metres. The left part of it has a chamfered transverse beam with lamb's tongue stops, and plain joists of vertical section. The right axial stack has 2 wide wood-burning hearths, one of which has a wrought iron crane and trammel, 2 brewing pans and a wash-boiler. In the lean-to at the right end is a large bread oven. The crosswing has jowled posts, close studding, curved braces trenched to the outside, moulded tiebeams and moulded bridging beams above the first floor. Other beams boxed in, but some are likely to be moulded also. A timber with a carved date is reported to be present in the roof. Early C19 stair with stick balusters, and folding shutters in the ground floor room each side of the stair hall. RCHM 2.
