MATTERDALE NY 42 W 2/144 Sparket Mill -

- II Water cornmill, later extended for sawmill. Probably C18 with C19 house and machinery. Stone rubble with dressed quoins and slate roofs. L-plan mill has house to south, sawmill to north and grain drying kiln to west. East elevation of mill has lean-to canopy on stone post to south of gabled wing. Small window and entrance in infilled larger entrance and small window above; wing has sashed windows with glazing bars to south return and gable-end stack. Roof being repaired (1987). House of 5 bays, the 1st 2 bays forming recessed later addition with lean-to single-storey outshut to angle. Windows mostly sashed with glazing bars; small-paned casements to 2nd bay and small sash over entrance between 3rd and 4th bays; garage entrance to 1st bay. Gable-end stacks to 3rd and 4th bays. Sawmill to north of 2 storeys with open front and central pier. Remains of timber structure to angle with wing, which has window with lattice leaded glazing and 1st floor entrance. Roof being renewed (1987). West elevation similar, built into side of hill, some windows with small-paned fixed glazing and opening lights. 1st floor entrance to mill and gabled wing on same level with grain kiln and later garage. Interior of mill has timber and iron machinery which is fairly complete, having been in use within last 10 years, including stones and hoppers, hoists, jack rings etc. Timber wheel on iron axle now in sawmill, which retains some line shafting, and small health and bellows in corner; some line shafting projects into open. Kiln retains floor of pierced ceramic tiles. An example of a mill retaining much of its machinery.
