TL 60 NW WILLINGALE SHELLOW ROAD (South side), 6/10 Shellow Hall 27.8.57 II
House, early C17, mid C17 and early C19, timber framed and plastered with peg tile roofs. Two storeys and an 'L' shaped complex with a main north facing block and a large wing at the south-east corner. The main front has a gabled peg tile roof with a gable end stack at the west end and single storey, hipped roofed blocks at each end. The first floor has 3 square double hung sashes with small panes and moulded surrounds over 2 similar windows and an early C19 central door surround with flat hood. The single storey block has one similar window and one formerly existed in the west block. The west gable is part tile hung. Out of the east block is a large C17 brick stack with concertina angled shafts and stepped 'fins' on outer edge. To the rear a further 2 storey, gabled peg tile roofed block, linked by a later infill to the front block, with an east flank wall stack. This has original early C17 carved and moulded bargeboards on north end, is part underbuilt with C19 red brick on east side and has black weatherboarding on south facing gable. The interior of main block reveals timber frame of probable mid C17 with hollow chamfered, jowled storey posts, most posts unjowled and double side purlin roof. Superficial modernisation of early C19. The rear block is of 3 bays with an interesting butt purlin roof with low flat wind braces and high mounted tenoned collar at each primary truss. This box framed structure was former kitchen/brewhouse and has wide timber mantle beamed fireplace with copper and bread oven. Within roof space of link block is a mid C17 window, now enveloped in later building but with all original fittings and diamond leaded lights. Some fragments of old pargetting on exterior and remains of figure of eight moat.
