Orchard Cottage
(Formerly listed as CORNWORTHY (WOODLAND LANE) Beer's Barn)
II
Houses. Circa late C17 or C18. Roughcast stone rubble. Thatched roof with gabled ends; rear wing has hipped roof. Rendered stacks at gable ends with slate weathering; the right hand end stack projects slightly; lateral rendered brick stack at the outer right hand side of rear wing.
Plan: Overall L-shaped plan. The main front range has a two-room plan, a central entrance passage with a staircase at the back; each room is heated from a gable end stack, the large left hand room was probably originally the kitchen with a lower floor level. The single storey wing behind the right hand room maybe integral and probably originally unheated; it now has a lateral stack on the outer right side. The outshut at the rear of the main range appears to be an addition, probably of late C18 or early C19. In the mid to late C20 the space between the outshut and rear wing was infilled with a single storey addition.
Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical three window front. S circa late C19 or early C20 two-light casements on the first floor and two C19 two-light casements on the ground floor with glazing bars. Doorway to right of centre with a C20 panelled door and small C20 brick gabled porch.
Rear elevation: Single storey rear wing to left has hipped roof and large C20 casement in the end wall. The main roof is swept down over the rear outshut. The space between the rear wing and outshut has been filled with a mid to late C20 single storey flat-roof addition.
Interior: Only the ground floor of the main range was inspected, both rooms have blocked fireplaces, the left hand room has exposed rough joists and the right hand room has a roughly chamfered cross-beam. The wider staircase at the back of the passage is C20.
The roof structure was not inspected.
