DIPTFORD SX75NW DIPTFORD 4/244 Ryes (formerly listed as Ryes Cottage)

8.8.78 II

Small house. Probably mid C18. Rendered stone rubble. Thatched roof with gabled ends, right hand end abuts adjoining cottage which is not included. Gable end stacks; the right hand stack has a squat rendered shaft with slate weathering; the left hand stack has thinner shaft with chimney pot made from 4 slates on edge and joined by mortice and tenon type of joints. Plan: Probably originally a 2-room plan house each room heated by a gable end stack later subdivided into a pair of 1-room plan cottages and in C20 reunited into one house. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window range. Circa late C19 2-light first floor casements with glazing bars. Ground floor 2 C20 large casements to left and a C20 plank door to right of centre. Interior: the right hand room has only thin slightly chamfered wavy ceiling joists without a main beam. The ceiling over the left hand room has a replaced cross-beam. Both rooms have altered fireplaces. Roof: the circa C18 roof has collars lapped and pegged to the face of the straight principal rafters which have halved and pegged apexes.
