Description

SS 71 NE ROSE ASH

8/98 Little Venhay

II

House. An early C19 remodelling of an earlier, possibly C17 building. Whitewashed, rendered cob and stone; slate roof, half-hipped at left end, gabled at right end; projecting left end stack, right end stack and axial stack. Plan: Single depth main range, 3 rooms wide with an entrance to right of centre into a passage and a rear outshut enclosing a gabled rear right stair projection. The main range contains a kitchen to the left, a living room in the centre and a parlour to the right. The outshut provides service rooms and a rear entrance hall. The plan suggests that a C17 3 room and through passage house has been refashioned in the early C19. Exterior: Asymmetrical 4 window garden front with a half-glazed panelled door to right of centre and a C20 French window to the left. First floor window left is a 3- light C19 or C20 small-pane timber casement, all the other windows are pretty 2-light early C19 Gothick arched casements with small panes. The rear elevation shows the gable of the stair projection which has curly bargeboards and a Gothick stair window to match those on the front, there is also a gabled rear porch to the outshut. Interior: The 2 left hand rooms have open fireplaces, probably C19 in date, the kitchen fireplace with an iron lintel, the living room fireplace with a timber lintel. The parlour fireplace is flanked by wall recesses and the parlour has a good early C19 panelled door. The fine stick baluster staircase has a ramped, wreathed handrail. An attractive feature of the outshut is pitched stone paving to the rear entrance hall, the stones laid in diamond patterns. Roof space not inspected. A traditional farmhouse with an attractive early C19 remodelling with exterior and interior features of interest.
