Description

KINGS NYMPTON KINGS NYMPTON SS 61 NE 3/143 Glebe Cottage 20.2.67 GV II House. Late C17 probably incorporating some earlier fabric. Painted rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof with gable ends. Brick stack at left end and axial brick stack with toothed capping. Plan: 3-room and lobby entry plan, the stack heating hall to left and kitchen to right, with inner room at left end. Staircases to rear right-hand corner of kitchen and running up rear wall of hall. Exterior: 2 storeys. 6-window range. Much of the original fenestration survives, with three 3-light casements on each floor, with rectangular leaded panes containing some original colloured glass. Plank door with 2 glazed upper panels. No rear outshuts. Interior: largely remodelled in C19 and with virtually no alterations since that date. Kitchen fireplace has plastered timber lintel, bread oven and former copper to right. C19 chimneypiece to hall fireplace. Hall/inner room 2-plank ledged door has naturalistic scene painted in oils directly onto the wood, probably early C20. No visible ceiling beams. Upper storey also very little altered. Roof structure intact with pegged A-frame trusses with lapped collars, purlins resting on the backs of the principals. Some of the timbers may be reused smoke-blackened medieval timbers.
