Description

SX 79 SE CHERITON BISHOP CROCKERNWELL

10/44 Nos. 1-4 (consec.) Fordton Cottages

II

Row of 4 cottages. Probably early C19, modernised and rearranged in mid C20. Plastered cob on rubble footings; cob or rubble stacks topped with brick; thatched roof. 2-storey range under continuous roof hipped at each end. Original symmetry of plan and appearance has been altered slightly by C20 internal rearrangement. Originally a regular row of 2 room cottages with centre pair having mirror plans either side of large axial stack and breaking forward a little from the fronts of the flanking cottages, each with a room either side of its own axial stack and probably with front doors on the end of the range. Overall 8 window front of C19 and C20 timber casements 3- and 2-light casements, 3 panes per light. Inserted central doorway (to No. 3) as No. 4 (right side) now has 3 window front and No. 2 (left of centre) one room front. Door to No. 1 (left end) now on side. Despite alterations the range remains an attractive row of thatched cottages.
