A Grade I Listed Building in Offwell, Devon

  • St Mary: basically c15 church much restored; two-stage west tower with embattled parapet; gabled porch with diagonal buttresses

  • St Mary: view from the north showing semi octagonal stair turret; replaced c19 windows

  • St Mary: nave showing some c.1200 work including the chancel arch; Perpendicular north arcade

  • St Mary: detail of one of the nave capitals

  • St Mary: some texts over the south doorway

  • St Mary: east window, c.1850

  • St Mary: some medieval glass fragments in south window; probably Flemish

  • St Mary: oak pulpit from 1724

  • St Mary: Flemish c16 oak reredos including a panel of Christ carrying the Cross; flanking panels represent the Evangelists

  • St Mary: two bays from c15 rood screen with Perpendicular tracery; dado of painted saints; cresting with angels & foliage; brought in from St Mary Major, Exeter in 1970

  • St Mary: memorial to Joanna (nee Collins of Offwell), d.1696, wife of Thomas Southcote of Kilmington; pediment & cartouche; apron below of carved foliage

  • St Mary: detail from the memorial to Joanna Southcote, d.1696; swan-necked pediment & cartouche containing the Southcote arms

  • St Mary: memorial to John Ford, d.1729, & wife Mary Fry of Wood, d.1724

  • St Mary: one of several c19 memorials to members of Coplestone family; this one is for Harriet (nee Townsend), d.1835
