Description

ELSHAM A 15 HUMBERSTDE GLANFORD 5264 TA 01 SE (east side, off) 6/12 Threshing barn to east and cartshed/granary 16.1.84 range to north of foldyard at Elsham Top Farm - II Threshing barn and adjoining cartshed/granary. 1840s for T G Corbett of Elsham Hall. Later alterations and additions to cartshed/granary range. Chalk ashlar with red brick plinth. Westmorland green and grey slate roof. L-shaped on plan: barn to east of foldyard with cartshed/granary range adjoining at right angles to north. 2 storeys. Barn: plinth, tall elliptical-arched wagon entrance to left of centre flanked by single ground- floor doors with flattened basket arches. First floor: 2 pitching hatches with similar arches, to left with board door, to right with glazing bars; door to right end with timber lintel. All arches with finely-cut chalk voussoirs. Stepped brick eaves. Hipped roof. Cartshed/granary range, external face forms right return of barn: 9 first-floor openings. 7 ground- floor flattened basket-arched cart openings to left supported on chamfered piers; to right, a round-headed door and 4 flattened basket-arched openings with part-glazed boarded ventilation hatches. First floor has similar openings with slatted hatches and inserted brick sills. Later outshut to centre of no special interest. Rear, facing foldyard, has blocked entrances to barn, and 3 doors, 4 ground-floor openings and 7 first-floor openings to cartshed/granary range, all with surrounds and hatches similar to external face: adjoining ranges to south of barn and cartshed/granary range of no special interest. A particularly large and finely-constructed range of chalk farm buildings, probably the latest in the Wolds to be built of this material and the only known example in ashlar rather than hammer-dressed stone. The cartshed/granary is disused and in serious disrepair (roof partly collapsed) at time of resurvey.
