House. Later C17, W bay C18, E wing and gabled rear (N) extensions mid C19, S extension to E wing c.1966, garage wing to NW late C20. Timber frame cased in painted brickwork, E wing and later extensions painted brick. Steep old red tile roofs. An irregular Z-shaped house, the oldest 2-storeys range facing S with gabled rear NE stair turret and 2 similar gables to W at rear added later. Taller E wing of 2-storeys raised over a cellar. Large internal chimney at junction of these 2 parts. 1½-storeys garage wing extending to N at W end. S front has 3 1st floor windows with small gables over them. 3-lights flush casement windows. Similar windows to ground floor with 2-, 5-, and 3-lights. Door between the latter two. E front of parlour wing has canted bay with sash windows, segmental arch to cellar below, and on upper window below the corbelled eaves band. Interior has exposed timbers and shows that the building was originally of 1½-storeys and 2-bays with end chimneys, entrance into E room and stair rising out of it. W bay probably C18, when front wall heightened to full 2-storeys. Clasped-purlin original roof, long straight tension braces in walls, tie-beams exposed on 1st floor. Axial chamfered floor beams with ogee stops. Interesting fireplace in W chimney with recesses in semi-circular back. The Three Horseshoes P.H. during the C19. Large oval terracotta relief portrait medallion and name plaque of Tennyson C19 by Doulton formerly on the Birkbeck Bank, Holborn, built into N wall of garage 1967. (RCHM Typescript).
