HIGH WYCH ROAD 1. 5253 (South Side) No 15 (Falconers) TL 474 141:6/19 II* GV 2. C14 aisled hall and crosswing. ?C17 large stack inserted in upper end of hall. Roof eaves raised early C18 and interior remodelled. Extended by 2 storey rear range and given some new windows and wavy bargeboards in C19. Timberframe rough plastered. Gabled old red tile roofs. Cross wing on E at higher level with original steep roof. Front faces N. Small internal gable stack in front slope of roof at W. 2 storeys 3 windows to hall range, 1 window to cross wing on E. C18 flush box sashes with 6/6 panes and moulded architraves to 1st floor of main range. C19 flush sashes with 8/8 panes and external shutters to Gd floor. C19 3/3 paned flush sashes to cross wing. C19,4 panel door with glazed round headed upper panels. Gabled tiled open porch modern. E end has early C19 brick plastered,2 storey, canted bay window with recessed sashes and vertical margin lights. Early C19 rear wing stucco lined as ashlar probably on timberframe. E end has large flush sash window of 6/9 panes with 3-panelled external shutters to Gd floor. Smaller 6/6 pane flush sash over and wavy bargeboard with central pendant. N side has irregular pattern of sash windows and plank side door. Internally chamfered axial beams in service end and parlour end support cross beams. Entrance door on N and cupboard on line of cross passage. Early C18, 2 panelled doors with H hinges. Stair rises in hall and,on both floors, a passage on the S side is separated from the hall and the chamber over only by an openwork screen with solid dado and spaced moulded splats above. Structure of aisled hall exposed in W gable and framed wall at lower end of hall. Heavy jowled wall posts and arcade posts with tension braces in framework. Arcade plates can be traced along the building. Soot blackened rafters and evidence for crown post roof. Roof of hall recently rebuilt. Cross wing roof probably original. Falconers is said to have been latterly the residence of the falconer of the Pishiobury estate. It is of special interest as the oldest domestic building surviving in Sawbridgeworth and in origin must have been of high social status, possibly an earlier manorial centre.
