KNIGHT STREET 1. 5253 (West Side) TL 4838 1485:3/56 6.6.52 No 40 II* GV 2. C16, parts refronted in brick in early C18 and early C19, with C18 interiors. Timberframe, 2 storeys, plastered under steep old red tile roofs, hipped to main house but lower N part gabled. This part is the service end of the hall of C16 house. The brick front is a rebuilding of part of the earlier structure. There is no internal structural division on either floor corresponding to the change from C18 red brick to C19 yellow brick on the facade. Staircase projecting at rear (RCHM Typescript). 2 storeys. Large external chimney at junction with lower N part. This part is plastered, with a single 1st floor 2 light wooden casement with diamond leaded glazing, on street front with slight eaves overhang. The S part of the frontage has c.1720 refronting in red brick with lighter red dressings and gauged and moulded brick architectural features. Giant order pilasters form the corners. 2 storeys and parapet, 4 windows wide. Segmental headed openings with projecting brick keystones. Sash windows slightly recessed with 6/6 panes, segmental heads to frame and sash on 1st floor, square on Gd floor. 2nd window from N has higher cill over door. Projecting plinth and brick entablature break forward over pilasters with panel on parapet. Necking on pilasters below entablature. Moulded band at floor level returned at ends before pilasters. Mouldings of entablature and floor band break forward overkeystone of each window. Broad wood Doric doorcase with 6 panelled raised and fielded door, top 2 glazed, fluted pilasters, full entablature and mutuled flat moulded hood. Narrow C19 yellow brick, 2 storey, 1 window extension of brick front northward. No parapet, token brick band and windows set lower. Segmental headed openings with rendered arches. Matching slightly recessed sash windows. C18 interiors to entrance hall and panelled S room (RCHM Typescript). Illustrated by Nathaniel Lloyd in his A History of English Brickwork (1928) 235. An interesting house with a fine brick facade rather earlier than that at No 28 Knight Street, qv.
