Wealden house. C15 or earlier, chimney inserted c1700, S wing c1800, divided in C19. Timber frame on tarred brick sill, roughcast with steep old red tile roof carried down as catslide over rear outshot. Painted brick S wing. A 2-storeys house facing E. Former open-hall and storeyed end bays, separately jettied to front, covered by a single pitched roof. Front eaves carried out beyond front wall of hall, linking the jettied end bays. Curved braces support wallplate over the gap, and curved timbers link it to an inner wallplate of the hall forming a cove. Parlour with solar over at N end (former No 34), cross-passage within hall with chimney backing onto it. Twin 4-centred arches into S bay, formerly divided axially for service rooms. S wing built as a separate small house on single fronted, double pile plan, now part of No 36. Chimney inserted in C19 at rear NW corner of N parlour wing when it became a separate cottage with a small gabled one-storey rear wing. Front has 3 flush casement window to each floor with small panes. Segmental oriel under left hand jetty. Recessed sash windows to S wing. Panelled door up steps into cross-passage. Union firemark central at 1st floor level. Small upper light cut through cove over middle bedroom window. Interior has heavy moulded cambered tie-beams with deep arched braces to open-truss of hall, close studding in walls and partitions with curved tension bracing, and chamfered floor beams. Stair at back of hall in line with inserted chimney. A little altered example of an unusual late medieval house-type.
