FLAMSTEAD VALLEY LANE TL Ol SE (North side) 4/227 Valley Cottage II

House. Early/mid C18, altered mid C19, rear extension c.1950. Red brick in Flemish-bond, stuccoed plinth; parts of rear lean-to extension dark weatherboarded. Old red tile roof. A 2-storeys, 2-cells, internal- chimney plan house on roadside, facing S, with upper rooms rising partly into roof. S front has 2 windows to each floor and later door in middle. 3-lights, small-panes, casement windows slightly recessed, with segmental arches to ground floor. Brickwork around doorway shows it has been cut in. 4-panels, flush-beaded door recessed with gabled timber porch. Door in E end into smaller room with axial beam, large fireplace, red and black tiles, and C20 3-lights casement window on E wall. Former window in N wall blocked by rear catslide extension. Larger W room has axial beam with chamfer and run-out stops, irregular squared joists, large fireplace backing onto other fireplace, winding stair to rear of chimney, 2-lights window inserted in W wall, and wide fireplace on N with large external chimney, said to be for laundry use in past, serving Beechwood House. Old iron hinges to plank door to staircase. Edge-halved scarf joint in rear wallplate. Small Victorian fireplace in room over W room. Clasped purlin roof in 2 unequal spans with inclined straight queen-posts.
