1/71 Upper Court

29/9/52 II*

Farmhouse. Mid-C16 with C17 and later additions. Rubble, stone slate roof. U-plan, front range north/south forms original house, east/west range from south end; another north/south range contains the offices (kitchen, dairy and so on). North/south front range: cross-wing at north end, about same length as width of house because of C19 brick lean-to on east side; central porch on this side, basically mid-C16, stack on west wall of cross-wing, and south-west corner; east/west range mid C17; other north/ south range late C17. West front: 2 storeys, gable to left, 2 lateral stacks; irregular fenestration, 1:2:1 windows, 4-pane flush boxed sashes; ground floor: two 4-pane boxed sashes to left under concrete lintels; half-glazed door left of centre with overlight and late C19 gabled hood; 4-light casement with concrete lintel to right. North wall of north cross-wing has a reset lancet near north-east corner, perhaps C13 from Clifford Castle (qv). Porch on east wall probably early C17 with exposed framing, 2 curved raking struts to gable. Interior: heavily moulded ceiling beams to central ground floor room. Moulded door surround to upper room of porch. The mid-C19 outshot contains a Chinese Chippendale style staircase. (RCHM 1, p 41, no 15).
