Description

ASHTON SX 88 SE 6/2 Castlepark Farmhouse 11.11.52 II Farmhouse. Early/mid C17, probably extended in the C19. Whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings; thatched roof, gabled at right end, hipped at left end and carried down as a catslide over the rounded rear stair turret; projecting end stacks, axial stack. Plan: The early/mid C17 plan appears to have been single depth with 2 principal rooms, one on either side of an entrance lobby with a dairy to the rear of the lobby; newel stair in the left hand room, which was probably the parlour. The right hand room was probably the kitchen, heated from an end stack. In the circa early C19 the house was extended by a 1 room plan addition at the right end and in the C20 the dairy has been converted to a bathroom. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with 2 thatched porch on posts: one into lobby to left of centre, one into right hand room. Fenestration of 2 and 3- light C20 timber casements with glazing bars. The rear elevation has a blocked doorway, formerly into the centre room, a late C20 conservatory and the rounded stair projection. Interior: Chamfered crossbeams to 2 left hand rooms, step stops to extreme left hand room which has a partly blocked fireplace. The centre room fireplace has a plain lintel, granite rubble jambs and a bread oven. Roof: Apex not inspected at time of survey (1986) but side pegged jointed cruck roof construction above 2 left hand rooms. Roof trusses said not to be smoke-blackened.
