SK 23 SE PARISH OF BURNASTON MAIN STREET 4/4 (East Side) Walnut Farmhouse 15.9.75 and attached outbuilding GV II

Farmhouse and attached outbuilding. C17, 1730 and later C18, with C19 alterations. Red brick with gauged brick and plain brick dressings. Plain tile roofs, that to 1730 house double range with stone coped gables, brick gable stacks and low brick parapet with moulded stone cornice and that to late C18 wing steeply pitched with large rendered ridge stack and brick coped southern gable. Three storey, three bay 1730 house to north and two bay, two storey late C18 wing to south. The 1730 house has first and second floor plain bands and gauged brick dressings to ground and first floors, it also has an irregular facade, the two northern bays being close together. The ground floor has an off-central, raised and fielded panelled door in moulded timber surround, under a C19 semi-circular headed porch with lattice-work sides. To either side are glazing bar sashes under flat arches. Above, three similar sashes, and above again three more sashes, each under a segment head. The south gable wall has a lead gutter with decorative hopper head inscribed 'WWE 1730'. Rear elevation has segment headed sliding sashes. Attached to south is the late C18 wing which has an irregular facade with raised and fielded panelled door under segment head, closely flanked by tall fixed pane, segment headed cross windows to north and a low blocked cambered headed opening with small casement window and inserted plank door to south. Above are two irregularly placed 2-light glazing bar casements under segment heads. Rear elevation has catslide roof over later lean-to. Attached to north side of 1730 house is two bay, large panel, timber framed outbuilding with brick nogging. The outbuilding runs east-west and is attached to the house by a plain tile roof with open archway below. Later brink buildings attached to west end of outbuilding are not included in the listing. Interior of the 1730 house has good knobbed baluster, dogleg staircase with moulded handrail, all its original panelled doors, a beam in the roof inscribed '1730' and re-used C17 panelling to north wall of north first floor bedroom. Also rear southern room has C18 panelling with raised panels, moulded dado and cornice of good quality. Large chamfered beams throughout, with ogee stops and large inglenook with panelled cupboards to sides in southern front room.
