SK 21 SE PARISH OFNETHERSEAL GRANGEWOOD ROAD 5/34 (South Side) Grangewood Hall and Attached Stableblock II

House and attached. stableblock. Early C19 with c1960 alterations. House of fine ashlar with stone dressings, plinth and first floor band, painted red brick stables with painted stone dressings and first floor stone band. Both with hipped graduated slate roofs and moulded stone cornices, also with corniced ashlar ridge stacks to the house. Two storeys, three bay house with eight bay stableblock attached to north. Main garden front to south east has advanced central bay with stone mullioned tripartite glazing bar sash below bracketed pediment. To west there is a plain sash and to east, a glazing bar sash. Above there are three small glazing bar sashes. East elevation has advanced bay to south, with pairs of glazing bar sashes above and below, and a recessed wing to north with three glazing bar sashes below and four above, the extra one above the advanced porch set in the angle between the wings. This has double panelled doors below a traceried overlight flanked by Tuscan half columns, all set within a wide pilastered doorcase plus large cornice above with blocking course. West elevation has two storey bow to advanced southern bay with two plain sashes below and two glazing bar sashes above. Recessed wing to north has advanced central bay with two first floor glazing bar sashes, all other windows are C20. Stableblock has an advanced pedimented central two bays with C20 doors cutting through former quoined segmental arch to ground floor. Similar quoined arch to north with plank doors flanked by glazing bar sashes. Similar sash to south of advanced bays and C20 addition beyond to south. Above there are eight similar sashes. All sashes, except one, have wedge lintels with incised keystones. Above again to centre there is a blind circular traceried window in the pediment. Interior of house has an open well cantilevered Hoptonwood marble staircase with iron balustrade, two early C19 stone fireplaces to ground floor south rooms, some fine original plaster cornicing and some original panelled doors. The interior was extensively remodelled in 1960 and early C19 details have been copied and resited.
