1. WORCESTER ROAD 5249 SO 86 SW SP/611 The Herriotts

II 0/611 2. House, later converted to hotel, now old people's home. Main range built between 1825 and 1840. Wing to south added c.1880 for additional hotel accommodation. C20 extensions at rear and internal alterations. Red brick in Flemish bond, slate roofs, cast iron porte cochère and verandahs. Ridge and roof stacks with cornices except rebuilt stack at north end, boxed eaves. 2 storeys and attic. A long eleven bay range under a continuous roof hipped at either end. The central five bays are recessed between three bay end blocks. At the south end the added 6 bay wing of 1880 is set back (3:5:3:6). The recessed 5 bay range may be the earliest part of the structure: central main entrance doorway with narrow sidelights and rectangular fanlights with glazing bars all framed by Tuscan pilasters above side dado panels and entablature over. Double doors with glazed upper panels. In front of doorway a late C19 single storey cast iron porte cochère. Slender C.I. columns with foliage caps. Wide coach entries to either side on paired columns and 3 semi-circular arches on single columns to front with elaborately pierced spandrels and rectangular panels over. Plain pediment gable. Sashes to ground and first floor with glazing bars (3x5 panes) except for ground floor to right of doorway: C20 three light casements replacing sashes. Flat arch brick lintols. 5 roof dormers with barred casements and pyramidal roofs with lead ball finials. The front of the LH wing has a central doorway with decorative pattern of bars in fanlight, glazed panel door. Sashes to ground and first floor and in four bay end elevation (3x5 panes) all with shallow segmental arches with stucco mouldings and keyblocks. RH block similar but French windows with fanlights to ground floor, all windows with brick segmental arches. South wing with similar French windows and sashes with bars to first floor. Late C19 cast iron verandahs with slender columns and pierced brackets added to fronts of 3 bay blocks.
