Malthouse, now commercial premises. Probably mid C19; altered. Red brick in Flemish bond,; wood shingle roof. One storey with loft, 6 x 11 internal bays. Gabled entrance (north-east) elevation: various concrete-lintelled doors and windows; one soldier-brick-arched window; loft loading door, now window. Half-hipped gable with low eaves. Two malt-kiln louvres with pyramidal metal caps, that on left tall and with battered wood-shingled sides. Rear: later brick patching on left; later doors and windows. Returns: various small windows with vertical glazing bars and lapped glass; other openings. Interior: the front bay has the two kilns; the next 3 bays were floored (mostly removed), and then an unfloored section. The internal structure is unusual, having a complex timber framework of posts cross-beams, joists, tie-beams, longitudinal beams, and multi-directional straight braces; joints reinforced with metal straps and bolts; plank ridge-piece.
The Maltings appears on the 1870 O.S. Map; the 1840 Alton Tithe Map shows a malthouse on the site although it is not possible to tell if it is the one that exists today.
