PULENS LANE 1. 1501 (West side) SHEET No 10 Nos 14 and 16 (Old Mill Cottages) (Formerly listed as Nos 523 to 526 (consec) SU 72 SE 9/104 29.7.49. II GV 2. No number 12. L-shaped group of cottages. C19 plaque bears date of l606 but the cottages have early-mid C16 appearance. Undulating, high pitched, hipped, tiled roofs. Timber framed, with brick filling, on massive stone foundations, clearly visible in basement of Nos 14 and 16. 2 storeys and basement, 7 windows. Wide, 1-window, projecting section at left, with jettied lst floor on curved brackets, holds replaced oriel window. Large offset chimney stack in angle. Stout square framing of this section complete. Right 2 bays (No 10) much restored with modern casements. Malmstone walling at right over brick basement storey. Other windows are early C19 1-bar casements. At back, 1 storey and attic. Flush dormer window with overhanging, tiled gables. Tile hung upper part, brick and stone with some visible timber below. Inside, enormous beams especially in left section which may be as old as C15. Low ceilings with stopped chamfered beams. Stout, square wall framing, huge chimney stack. Original oak plank floors upstairs and old floor bricks below. Nos 14 and 16 now empty and being reconditioned. Nos 10, 14, 16, Mill Cottage and The Old Mill form a group.
