Description

STANWAY - SP 0632-0732 13/95 Papermill Farmhouse II* Farmhouse. C13, C17, C18, C19. Coursed, squared stone, stone slates. Hall and cross-wing, with further wing off rear of cross- wing on left, 2 and 2 1/2 storeys; single storey infill on left of cross wing. Entrance front: buttress to right end hall wing; 3- light casement window, gabled, single-storey porch in angle with cross wing, fully-glazed double doors, stone lintel. Above, blocked window, 3-light casement, iron-opening lights. Parapet gable right end, ashlar chimney on ridge, cyma-moulded cap. Cross- wing: porch partly covers blocked doorway, right return: 3-light casement, in gable wall; 2-light casement at half-level on right, similar above on left, all cambered stone arches. Lean-to against left return. Lean-to dormer right return. Chimney from eaves left return, and on ridge behind. Interior: rear room cross wing chamfered main beam in ceiling, exposed joists with slight chamfer. Spiral timber stair front right corner. Tie-beam and collar trusses, 2 pairs purlins. Hall wing: wide fireplace with timber lintel right end, rear left arched doorway to former spiral staircase. Roof to hall range 2 trusses, set half-bay in from each end, tie-beam, king post, principals curved at top, strut to post. One pair purlins supported on block tenoned to principal rafter and parallel principal above, stopping just above purlin. Straight braces from strut to purlin each way. Most rafters renewed, ashlar pieces survive on entrance side; all original timber heavily smoke blackened. Hall wing floored over at some period: cross wing rebuilt late C17 or early C18, windows altered C19. Truss very unusual C13 survival, only 2 similar known, both in Chichester. (J. Munby, M.
