NORTHLEACH WITH EASTINGTON SP 11 SW EASTINGTON 3/82 Eastington Manor 23.1.52 GV II*

Manor house. Possibly C15, altered C16-C17. Coursed squared and dressed limestone, stone slate roof, ashlar stacks. Rectangular plan with C15 range at centre, cross wing at west end may represent solar added slightly later. 1 1/2 storeys and 2 storeys and attic. Five-bay garden front, gable at cross wing left, two gables right. Two-light hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casement towards apex of right-hand gable. Three-light hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casement to second floor of far right-hand bay. Flat-chamfered 3 and 4-light stone-mullioned casements otherwise all stone-mullioned windows with stopped hoods. One single light with leaded panes and early window glass. C20 plank door with fillets and decorative strap hinges within flat-chamfered C20 basket-headed surround to cross wing. Blocked pigeon holes towards apex at gable right of cross wing. C20 casements with leaded panes in right gable end extended forwards early C20. All windows to north front C20 casements with leaded panes: Single-bay extension breaks forwards far let with 2-light ovolo-moulded casement. Axial and gable-end stacks. Interior; room at west end of C15 range at centre contains tie beam with hollow-moulded chamfers and beading and stepped stops. Joists also have beaded mouldings. Open fireplace with bressumer and two inglenook seats. Fireback attached to wall at rear of fireplace decorated with cartouche with three swords at centre, and the date 1687. Spiral stair right of fireplace. 'T'-shaped arrangement of tie beams with deep flat-chamfers in room forming remainder of ground floor. Open fireplace with bressumer beam and cast iron fireback decorated with two batons and dated and initialled I.T./ 1663 / S.W. Roof of this range reputed to contain a cruck truss (not inspected at time of resurvey). C17 stone fire surround with bolection moulding in bedroom on first floor above. Cross wing at west end; two upper cruck trusses with braced 'V'- shaped collar. Two pairs of curved windbraces. The manor of Eastington was held by St Peter's Abbey, Gloucester, before the Reformation, then by the Crown and from 1600 by the Dutton family.
