WATTON-AT-STONE - TL 32 SW 2/10000 Gregory's Farmhouse - II

Farmhouse. Circa late medieval, remodelled in circa early C17; extended in C19 and late C20. Roughcast timber-frame. Plain tile roof with gabled ends. Rendered brick axial and gable end stacks. Plan: The front range is the result of a circa early C17 remodelling of an earlier house. It has a 3-room plan with an inserted axial stack with back-to-back fireplaces heating a parlour on left and kitchen on right and with smaller unheated bay on right end now divided axially. In C19 a 2-span wing was built behind the left end and in late C20 an extension was built in the angle at the rear. Exterior: 1 storey and attic. Asymmetrical 4-window range C20 casements except for first floor centre C19 2-light casement with glazing bars; 2 gabled dormers; large C20 gabled parlour right. At rear 2 gables on right, C20 porch on left, all C20 casements. INTERIOR: Exposed timber frame. Left room parlour has chamfered-cross-beam with cyma stops at one end and large brick fireplace with chamfered timber jambs and lintel. Centre room former kitchen has no main beam and brick fireplace with unchamfered timber lintel and brick oven. Rear wing has exposed timber framing of original front range and unchamfered ceiling beams. Parlour chamber has fireplace with chamfered timber lintel with hollow step stops. Raised wall plate exposed and jowled posts in front of and behind stack. Earlier lower tie-beam on hall/kitchen (right) side of stack chamfered on right side. Circa C17 clasped purlin roof over parlour to left of stack; roof over hall-kitchen and low end rebuilt.
