Description

PARISH OF DRONFIELD GOSFORTH LANE SK 37 NW 5/35 Nos 3,5,7,9, Manor Court (formerly 5.9.78 listed as two barns with covered link on west side of yard at Manor Farm) II Houses, formerly farm outbuilding. Mid C17, with C19 alterations, converted 1985-6. Coursed squared coal measures sandstone with quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, stone slates and Welsh slates. Taller five bay range to south with two bay offshut in east side at west end, two bay range at north end, the two ranges linked by a covered bay. Main range, east elevation, two storeys, five bays, with former threshing doorway now with C20 segmental arch above glazed screen, and 2-light openings with C20 casements and stone heads. The building has nine roof bays, the two bays on either side of the threshing bay being divided into two sub-bays by hammer beams, the hammer posts having ornamental pendant finials, the arched braces supporting them being morticed into wall posts resting on shaped stone corbels. The principal trusses have collar and tie beams, the trusses supporting double through purlins, with windbraces above the upper purlin. At the south end, the offshut is carried on full-height jowel posts, which are braced longitudinally and transversely and which have a tie beam linking the post to the offshut wall plate, together with a raking strut on its upper surface supporting the offshut rafter. Lower range at north end has two doorways with massive lintels and quoined surrounds and small single light windows with C17 surrounds now all with C20 joinery. C20 doorway inserted between earlier doors. Covered bay is an extension of the lower roof. The buildings form part of the courtyard of Manor Farmhouse, associated with the Manor House. The farmhouse was replaced in the C19 by the present structure which is not included in this list.
