FLETCHER GATE 1. 5266 (North Side) Nos 2 and 4 (The Old Hall) TA 1928 NW 2/5 9.1.54. II* 2. Early C18. Built for Henry Waterland (1673-1766), solicitor, patron of the Borough, several times Mayor, and brother of Dr Daniel Waterland, Archdeacon of York. Brown brick. Double pile. Pantile roof with narrow valley and coped gables carried across valley to form parapet. Two storeys. Wooden brackets to gutter. Slight break forwards at corners and at centre bay. Five ranges of cased sashes with keystones and rubbed voussoirs. Door with 8 fielded panels and oblong fanlight with glazing bars. Flat hood on elaborately carved scrolled consoles. East side has various cased sashes and one mid-C19 French casement with marginal glazing bars. Rear wing has tumbled gable. Interior. Doors each with 6 fielded panels and moulded surrounds throughout. Hall has wooden modillioned cornice. Cantilevered staircase with moulded handrail ramped upwards to newels, and original newels in situ: these have spirally gadrooned bases and octagonal knops 1/3 way up. Moulded dado on wall opposite balusters, with fielded panels below. Principal ground floor room is wainscotted throughout. Moulded dado, dentilled cornice, and fielded panels. Door flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters. Windows have window seats and shutters with fielded panelling. Room above this has similar panelling. Diagonally-placed fireplace with Arts and Craft chimneypiece (tall tapering pilasters to eye-level mantel shelf). Windows have window seats and shutters with fielded panelling. Other 1st floor room lids fielded panelling partly dismantled. Windows have window seats and shutters with fielded panelling. Mid C19 iron grate.
