GV II House. Early-mid C18 for Carvile family; early-mid C19 additions to right and rear; bay window added to left return and porch added to rear in late C19 - early C20. Red brick in Flemish bond. Pantile roof to main range; Welsh slates to right extension. Original section L-shaped on plan, with 2- room central entrance-hall south front and single-room wing to rear right; later single-room infill to rear left, outshut to right and entrance porch to rear. South front: 2 storeys, 5 bays; symmetrical, with single-bay extension set back to right. Entrance has stone step with moulded nosing, doorcase with panelled pilasters carrying entablature with raised panels to frieze, moulded cornice and pediment; half-glazed door with 6 glazed panels over 2 fielded panels, beneath moulded cornice and 3-pane overlight in reveal with moulded fielded-and-beaded-panelling, especially ornate to soffit. 12-pane sashes with thick glazing bars in flush wooden architraves with sills below rubbed-brick flat arches, the first-floor windows with shallower arches. 3-course brick band at eaves level, stone-coped parapet. Double-span roof with tumbled-in brick to raised gables, low inserted stone- coped parapet between gables to left return, full-height inserted parapet between gables to right return. Corniced end stacks. Extension to right has single sashes with narrow glazing bars in similar surrounds to main range but with shallower flat arches; parapet with single-course brick band, ramped down to right. Left return: straight joint between front and rear sections; pairs of 12-pane ground and first-floor sashes to right, similar to those at front; ground-floor brick canted bay to left, with two 12-pane first-floor sashes above with narrow glazing bars. Rear: projecting full- height entrance porch has stone step with moulded nosing to C20 panelled double door beneath basket arch with single-course brick hoodmould, large unequal 20-pane first-floor sash in flush wooden architrave beneath similar arch and hoodmould; fine circular ashlar tablet above with ornate moulded border and relief of mother and child, tumbled-in brick to raised gable; sides have single 4-pane windows beneath basket arches with hoodmoulds to each floor. Side bays have pairs of 12-pane sashes in flush wooden architraves to ground floor, single similar sashes to first floor. Bracketed gutter. Straight joint to left of porch. Extension set back to left has similar windows and parapet to south front. Interior. Ground- floor front drawing and dining rooms each retain original early C18 fielded panelling with moulded dado, moulded cornice, overmantel with eared and shouldered architrave; drawing room to right has oval window above door to passage with thick glazing bars and architrave. Stairhall has moulded cornice, plasterwork oval fan motif ceiling rose and an open well cantilevered staircase, re-set or inserted in later C18 - early C19, with a ramped and wreathed corniced handrail, column balusters on tall square fluted pedestals, scrolled cheekpieces, and beaded panelling to underside. Drawing room, rear left, has moulded plaster cornice, beaded-panel window shutters. First-floor front rooms have moulded cornices, panelled window seats and shutters, original wooden chimney-pieces with architraves, pulvinated friezes and moulded cornices; segmental-headed alcoves to centre- right bedroom. Beaded stick balustrade to early C19 back stairs. The rear porch, perhaps of C17 origins, is reputed to have been brought from a Hull inn.
