7/249 Barn at Elliott's
II
Barn; C18, loft added late C19; random rubble stone gables and back wall; contemporary brick nogged timber-frame on stone plinth to front; corrugated iron roof. Three-bay barn, contemporary lean-to to rear. Facade to yard: timber-framed, long straight braces to sill from main posts, 4-panel high with thin, probably nailed rails. Ends of stone gables frame facade. Double boarded doors in centre, left door divided horizontally: cambered timber lintel over; door posts down to ground level. On left 2 panels infill missing, both sides small, cross-shaped air vents to each panel in upper half of wall. Timber-framed lean-to on right not of special interest. Left return 2 pairs slit air vents to barn, one in gable over, and in end of lean-to. Small brick building against lean-to not of special interest. Interior: originally timber sill with braces to wall posts each side of threshing floor; inserted lofts. Rear wall of barn timber-framed, as front, threshing floor extends across lean-to, low doors in rear wall. Tie-beams and angle-strut trusses, 2 pairs butt purlins, square ridge. Room on left in lean-to entered off threshing floor, right from outside, latter originally lofted: both rooms probably for livestock, loft for hens. An interesting example of late stage of timber-framing.
